Citizens Directed Reading courses offers a number of subject areas that allow the student to study in areas of strong interest that are not covered or offered at their local school, or the student wants to study an area of interest in much depth.

These Directed Reading courses can be used to support your local high school diploma plan as electives or to support after graduation plans to assist with college acceptance, career enhancement, or a special life interest.

The student pursues their chosen Directed Reading subject area under the guidance of a CHS faculty member.

Military History

During this directed reading topic, students will examine the role of the military and conflict on both the ancient and modern world.  Students will read and analyze the strategic, technological, cultural, and political influence of warfare on human history and the development of civilizations from Ancient Greece to the war in Afghanistan. Coming 2024

Social Justice

This directed reading topic allows students who have an interest’s social justice topics to discover more information and become active on topics that interest them. Students will read and analyze about various social movements related to race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and class. Discover which social justice issues matter most to you and learn how to become a force of positive change in your community and the world. 

African American Studies

This directed reading topic allows students who have an interest in African-American studies to learn more about the history, cultural impact, and current events of African-Americans.  Students will learn about selected individuals who have shaped and been shaped by African-American struggles for freedom and justice.  Students will be able to travel back in time and see the world of injustice, struggle, racism and deliberation that as impacted the life of African-Americans for centuries.

Course topics currently available include:  African-Americans in Sports, African-Americans and the Civil Rights Movement, African-Americans and US History, African-Americans in the Civil War, African-Americans in the Modern Day, African-Americans in Culture, and African-Americans in Sociology.

Global Cultures and History

Global Cultures and Societies is a directed reading topic that examines the world from several competing perspectives such as sociology, education, politics, history, economics, business, geography, and international affairs. This topic will familiarize students with these terms through the exploration of literature. Using a holistic perspective, this topic will cross-culturally examine key facets of global society to show how culture shapes our global worldview. Coming mid-June 2021

Latin American Studies

This directed reading topic allows students who have an interest in Latin-American studies to learn more about the history, cultural impact, and current events of Latin-Americans. Students will study in-depth the cultural and ethnic distinctions that exist between Latin-American countries, both historical and contemporary.  Students will also be able to study topics and events that currently impact Latin-Americans. 

Course topics currently available include:

Great Works in Literature

This directed reading topic guides students through purposeful, meaningful explorations of rich, complex literature. Cultivate a love of reading with some of the most beloved literary works including Newbery Medal and Honor titles, timeless classics, and young adult literature.  Students will be able to focus on specific genres, timeframes, or collections.

Course topics currently available include:

Biblical Studies

This directed reading topic allows students who have an interest in the Bible to discover more information and go in-depth on topics that interest them.  Students will be able to learn more about the context of the verses, the history surrounding the Bible, its impact on our ethics, and how we apply it to our daily lives.

Course topics currently available include:  Old Testament, New Testament, Christian Philosophy, World Religions, Paul’s Epistles, Bible and Ethics, Biblical History, The Pentateuch, The Life of Jesus  (Should also have a link to the sub-catalog).

Current Events

This directed reading topic allows students who have an interest in the Current Events facing our nation or internationally to discover more information and go in-depth on the current events that interest them.  Using current events, this directed reading topic allows students to focus their learning on the history of the event, provide greater background knowledge, or study other places or people who have experienced the same event. 

Course topics currently available include:

Civil War Studies

This directed reading topic allows students to examine the American Civil War, the conflict that defined the United States. Students will read about the timeframe stretching from the Compromise of 1850 to the Presidential election of 1876, as well as the various reasons for the war, the combat, the eventual outcome, and the Reconstruction Period. Coming 2024

Sports in America

This Directed Reading topic allows students who have an interest in Sports in America to learn more about the history of Sports in America, its cultural impact, and current events that are shaping the sports industry today.  Students will be able to focus on specific sports, athletes or coaches, or examine the impact that sports and television have had on society. 

Course topics currently available include:

Civics

This directed reading topic provides students with a basic understanding of civic life, politics, and government. Students will read on how the democratic processes work, as well as how to engage in these processes.

Music and Culture

This directed reading topic allows students who have an interest in music and culture to learn more about music and its cultural impact.  Students will learn about selected genres of music and artists that have shaped American Culture.

Science Fiction

This directed reading topic is designed to increase students’ knowledge of the literary genre known as Science Fiction. Emphasis will be on the study of literature–novels and short fiction–that depicts our future world, visionary scientific endeavor, and conflicts between humans, aliens, and sentient technology.
