Citizens High School signs Dual Enrollment agreement with St. Johns River State College

Fleming Island, Florida, April 20, 2021:  Citizens High School (CHS), a 40-year-old distance learning school based in Fleming island, Florida, is pleased to announce it has signed an agreement to provide dual enrollment courses for high school and homeschool students interested in attending St. John’s River State College (SJRSC). “This partnership brings together two organizations who are solely focused on preparing students for their next step in life, and creating social and educational opportunities that will open doors for them in the future,” Says Dr. Jennifer Blalock, Citizens High School’s Chief Academic Officer.

Dual enrollment, which began in Florida in the early 2000s, attracts more than 40,000 students annually in the state. They allow secondary school students to simultaneously earn credit for high school and college-level courses. While most students take two college courses per semester, in some cases, a high school senior can enter college with a completed Associate’s Degree.

In today’s competitive job market and with students vying to get into top colleges and universities, Dual Enrollment can give graduates a leg up both financially and academically. “We’ve found that dual enrollment allows young people to enter college with plenty of valuable post-secondary study experience under their belts,” says Dr. James Etter, president of Citizens High School. “It eases them into the rigorous study and time management practices that are necessary to make it in college.” In addition, students save the cost of up to two full years of college. They can enter the workforce sooner and save money on college core coursework.

To qualify, high school or homeschool students, typically in their junior year, must maintain a 3.0-grade point average for credit-bearing college courses and a 2.0 for certificate programs, pass the appropriate college entrance exams and meet the requirements of the post-secondary school.

Meghan Deputy, Director of Dual Enrollment and College Access at SJRSC is looking forward to the flexibility that an online program offers prospective students. “The St. Johns River State College Dual Enrollment program is excited to offer college courses to students in our service district who are attending high school online through Citizens High School.”
