In this course, students will be given a comprehensive view of the upcoming obstacles and challenges faced in preparing to become collegiate and professional athletes. The course will focus on ensuring the student understands NCAA requirements as it pertains to academics and recruiting. Additionally, with increased attention, the course will give an overview on using social media appropriately and keeping strong mentally. Finally, we examine the new challenge of understanding name, image, and likeness and how student-athletes can create their own brand and be compensated for it.
The bright lights. The roaring crowds. The chants and cheers and applause. If you are drawn to the electricity of large events and the challenge of making events successful, a career in sports and entertainment marketing may be for you! In this course, you will trace the development of these industries, dissect their dual nature, and discover what it takes to pitch, promote, and deliver on these services. You ‘ll also explore the necessary steps to chart your own career path from among the professional roles that these industries need to operate. Let’s get off the sidelines and hop into the primetime of the sporting and entertainment worlds!
You’ve warmed up those muscles and stretched your understanding of basic human biomechanics, but now it’s time to power forward your learning even further! In Sports Medicine, you’ll expand your understanding of the human body to provide a greater context for injury in a variety of scenarios. You’ll learn how to evaluate an injury, onsite tests to perform, and when to refer a patient to a medical professional. You’ll also explore the anatomy of specific body areas to better understand injuries that may occur as well as ways to prevent injury. Are you ready to keep athletes functioning at peak levels? In this course, students will practice essential everyday skills while earning course credit! These life skills can vary, with topics ranging from grocery shopping on a budget to reading a map. Students will practice their analysis skills while examining and evaluating best practices for each life skill. During this course, students are provided freedom and autonomy to choose skills of interest and to decide how they would like to display their learning experience. Students will cultivate their creativity in presentation and clarity in writing skills to document each learning experience.
What does being fit really mean? It’s not only about losing weight. Being fit is about living life to the fullest and making the most of what you have yourself! You’ll learn about body functions, safety, diet, goals, and strategies for longevity. Explore the world of healthy living and see how real fitness can be achieved through intention, effort, and just the right amount of knowledge.
In this directed reading course, students examine the impact that African-American athletes have had on their sport, race relations, and culture as a whole. Students will follow the historical paths of African-American athletes during the time of segregation, as well as the breakthrough of athletes in both professional and collegiate sports. From there, the course will look at the expansion of roles for African-Americans in sports such as coaches, administrative roles, and ownership. Finally, the student will examine some current issues facing African-American athletes and the voices that are shaping those issues.
This directed reading course allows students an opportunity to study sports and their place in American culture.
To keep our body and our mind running like finely tuned machines, we need to use the right fuel. For humans, that means nourishing our bodies with the right foods. In this course, you’ll explore how food affects essential aspects of your life from your weight to how you age to how well you think. You’ll also examine how outside influences- family, peers, and the media- can affect your diet and your perception of food and how to set yourself up for nutritional success.
